The IDP Camp Qoratou is far distant from any village or town. Despite the heat in Sommer and the cold in winter people here are glad to have found shelter in the tents.
Water tap stands are close to the tents. arche noVa is making sure there is always enough water.
Every family is provided with water jerry cans for carrying and storing water. On the right-hand side of the photo there is a lavaotry. The family put up a tarp between this building and their tent to preserve their privacy.
The water systems in the camps Al-Wand, Qoratou and Daquq are maintained, fixed and extended regularly. In case of abnormal occurrences arche noVa staff is in attandance promptly.
arche noVa takes care of sewage in the camps as well. The septic tanks have to be emptied on a regular basis. They prevent effluents from percolating into the ground water.
arche noVa distributes hygiene kits containing buckets, toilet brushes, detergents and bin bags - a vital support for those who could carry along next to nothing.
Hygiene is an important issue. By organizing handwashing campaigns arche nova actively promotes health care in makeshift camps, where many people live in confined spaces.
With the help of a coloring book children learn how to avoid the transmission of contagious diseases and about good and bad hygiene practice. The book was designed and printed by the Iraqi arche noVa Team.
